Cardiff is the capital and
largest city of Wales and one of the largest cities in the United Kingdom,
with recent local government estimates stating the city's population as
being 317,500. Cardiff is part of the Euro cities network of the largest
European cities. Cardiff is bordered to the west by the rural district of
the Vale of Glamorgan, which is also known as The Garden of Cardiff,[5] to
the east by the city of Newport, to the north by the South Wales Valleys and
to the south by the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel. The River Taff winds
through the centre of the city and together with the River Ely flows into
the freshwater lake of Cardiff Bay. A third river, the Rhymney flows through
the east of the city entering directly into the Severn Estuary.
The Cathays electoral ward of
Cardiff consists of some or all of the following areas: Blackweir, Cardiff
city centre, Cathays, Cathays Park and Maindy in the the parliamentary
constituency of Cardiff Central. It is bounded by Gabalfa and Heath to the
north; Plasnewydd and Adamsdown to the east; Butetown to the south; and
Riverside to the west.
Cyncoed is a district of the
city of Cardiff, Wales. Located to the north-east of the city, Cyncoed is
one of the most affluent parts of Cardiff, and of Wales in general. It has
some of the highest property prices in Wale
Fairwater is a village and
district in north-west Cardiff. It is located a few miles from Culverhouse
Cross which connects Cardiff to the M4 motorway.
Grangetown is an area in
Cardiff, Wales. It is one of the largest districts in the south of the city
and is bordered by Riverside, Canton and Butetown. The River Taff winds its
way through the area. The population of Grangetown in the United Kingdom
Census 2001 was 14,367
Lisvane is a small suburb, but arguably a village, in city of Cardiff,
Wales. It is one of the most affluent parts of Cardiff and Wales with house
prices here higher than anywhere else in the city.
Llanishen is a district of
the city of Cardiff, Wales. Llanishen is also home to a fully-featured
Leisure Centre and the 60-acre Llanishen Reservoir - a local beauty spot
that is connected to a green corridor which bisects the city from the rising
hills in the north to Cardiff Bay in the south.
Pentwyn is a district of
Cardiff, Wales, located northeast of the city centre. Pentwyn has 3 pubs :
Village Inn, Hollybush and The Grand Slam. Pentwyn has its own shopping
centre which has a Post Office, Newsagent, Fish and Chip Shop.
Rhiwbina is a prosperous
northern suburb of Cardiff, Wales. It used to be a separate village, and its
core is still locally called "the village" .
Rumney is a district of the
city of Cardiff, Wales. It lies east of the River Rhymney. Within the older
sectors of the Rumney area, are places of interest, such as the historic
Rumney Pottery which is still in use today and also the remains of the old
Rumney Castle which was a major stronghold on the South Wales coast, the
remains of which were excavated in the late 70s and early 80s.
St. Fagans is a village in
the west of the city of Cardiff, Wales. It lies outside the city proper, but
inside the associated principal area. To the south lies the village of
Michaelston-super-Ely, and to the east the suburb of Fairwater. St Fagans
lies on the River Ely, and previously had a railway station on the South
Wales Main Line.
Thornhill is a suburb in the
county of Cardiff, Wales, south of Caerphilly and north of the city of
Cardiff. It is a modern area with plenty of new housing. Locally, there is a
community centre (Thornhill Church Centre), Sainsbury's supermarket, Martins
newsagents, Lloyds pharmacy and a Blockbuster. There are four pubs located
in Thornhill.
Tongwynlais is a medium size
semi rural popular tourism village in the Taff valley in South Wales. It
marks the start of Rural Cardiff and the South Wales valleys It lies within
the Whitchurch & Tongwynlais electoral ward of Cardiff. Tongwynlais Village
Square It is well served by roads as it is near Junction 32 of the M4
motorway and the A470 trunk road. The motorway separates Tongwynlais from
the city of Cardiff of which it is, effectively, a suburb. Its most notable
building is the much-visited Victorian folly of Castell Coch.
Trowbridge is an electoral
ward of the city of Cardiff, Wales. The ward includes some or all of the
areas of Cefn Mably, St Mellons estate and Trowbridge in the parliamentary
constituency of Cardiff South & Penarth. It is bounded by Pontprennau & Old
St. Mellons to the north west; Marshfield (in Newport principal area) to the
east; and Splott and Rumney to the west.
Whitchurch is a suburb of Cardiff, Wales. It is approximately 3 miles north
of the centre of the city on the A470 and A4054 roads. Its estimated
population as of 2004 was 15,649. It falls within the Whitchurch &
Tongwynlais ward.
