Cardiff is the capital and largest city of Wales and one of the largest cities in the United Kingdom, with recent local government estimates stating the city's population as being 317,500. Cardiff is part of the Euro cities network of the largest European cities. Cardiff is bordered to the west by the rural district of the Vale of Glamorgan, which is also known as The Garden of Cardiff,[5] to the east by the city of Newport, to the north by the South Wales Valleys and to the south by the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel. The River Taff winds through the centre of the city and together with the River Ely flows into the freshwater lake of Cardiff Bay. A third river, the Rhymney flows through the east of the city entering directly into the Severn Estuary.

The Cathays electoral ward of Cardiff consists of some or all of the following areas: Blackweir, Cardiff city centre, Cathays, Cathays Park and Maindy in the the parliamentary constituency of Cardiff Central. It is bounded by Gabalfa and Heath to the north; Plasnewydd and Adamsdown to the east; Butetown to the south; and Riverside to the west.

The ward includes some or all of the areas of Cefn Mably, St Mellons estate and Trowbridge in the parliamentary constituency of Cardiff South & Penarth. It is bounded by Pontprennau & Old St. Mellons to the north west; Marshfield (in Newport principal area) to the east; and Splott and Rumney to the west.

Whitchurch is a suburb of Cardiff, Wales. It is approximately 3 miles north of the centre of the city on the A470 and A4054 roads. Its estimated population as of 2004 was 15,649. It falls within the Whitchurch & Tongwynlais ward.
