Blaenau Gwent is a county borough and parliamentary constituency in South Wales. It borders the principal areas of Monmouthshire and Torfaen to the east, Caerphilly to the west and Powys to the north. Its main towns are Abertillery, Brynmawr, Ebbw Vale and Tredegar. The borough was formed in 1974 as a local government district, in the new county of Gwent. It was a merger of the Monmouthshire urban districts of Abertillery, Ebbw Vale, Nantyglo and Blaine and Tredegar, along with Brynmawr urban district and the parish of Llanelly in Brecknockshire. It was reconstituted in 1996 as a county borough,

Abertillery is a town in the county borough of Blaenau Gwent and the preserved county of Gwent, in southern Wales, 16 miles north-west of Newport, originally on the Great Western Railway. Its population rose steeply during the period of mining development in South Wales, being 10,846 in the 1891 census and 21,945 ten years later.

Blaina is a small town, situated deep within the South Wales Valleys between Brynmawr and Abertillery in what was previously the county of Gwent, originally part of the traditional county of Monmouthshire, and now part of the Blaenau Gwent area.

Brynmawr is a market town in south Wales. The town, sometimes cited as the highest town in Wales, situated at 1,250 to 1,500 feet above seal level and nestled at the head of the South Wales Valleys

Ebbw Vale is a town at the head of the valley formed by the Ebbw Fawr river or River Ebbw in South Wales. It is the largest town and the administrative centre of Blaenau Gwent county borough. The Ebbw Vale and Brynmawr conurbation has a population of roughly 33,000.

Tredegar is a town in the county borough of Blaenau Gwent, lying on the River Sirhowy in the Sirhowy Valley in south east Wales. It was formerly in Gwent and prior to that in Monmouthshire. The historic Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond, Virginia, United States was named in honour of the town.
