West Dunbartonshire is one of the 32 local government council areas of Scotland. Bordering onto the west of the City of Glasgow, containing many of Glasgow's commuter towns and villages as well as the city's suburbs. West Dunbartonshire also Borders onto Argyll and Bute, Stirling, East Dunbartonshire and  Renfrewshire. The area was formed on April 1, 1996 from part of the former Strathclyde Region, namely the entire district of Clydebank and the Dumbarton district less the Helensburgh area. In the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994 that created the council area its name was Dumbarton and Clydebank. The council elected as a shadow authority in 1995 resolved to change the name of the area to West Dunbartonshire.

Alexandria  is a town in West Dunbartonshire. The town is situated on the River Leven, four miles (6 km) north-west of Dumbarton. As of 2001, the population of the town is 13,444. A view at Balloch next to the National Park Visitor Centre with the 'Maid of the Loch' in the background Balloch is at the north end of the Vale of Leven, straddling the River Leven itself. It connects to the larger town of Alexandria and to the smaller village of Jamestown, both of which are located to its south. To the east of the town lies the major local authority housing scheme in the area known as 'The Haldane'. Balloch railway station is a terminus of the North Clyde electric train service from Glasgow.

Bonhill is a town in the Vale of Leven area of West Dunbartonshire. It sits on the Eastern bank of the River Leven opposite the larger town of Alexandria. The town rapidly expanded in the 1960s and 1970's when many residents of Glasgow were moved there when the old slums and tenements were demolished. This process was known as the "Glasgow overspill". The new council run housing schemes were characterised by a high incidence of poverty and unemployment, but the town has changed somewhat with the addition of private housing schemes (such as the Strathleven Park estate) from the late 1970s onwards. Due to a lack of planning when the new housing was built, Bonhill suffers from a lack of amenities. Most of these are located mainly in Alexandria, just across the river Leven and Dumbarton, two miles to the South. It serves as a commuter town to Dumbarton and beyond. According to the 2001 National Census, Bonhill's population is 9,574.

Clydebank is a town in West Dunbartonshire, in the Central Lowlands of Scotland. Situated on the north bank of the River Clyde, Clydebank borders Dumbarton, the town with which it was combined to form West Dunbartonshire, as well as the town of Milngavie in East Dunbartonshire, and the Yoker and Drumchapel districts of the adjacent City of Glasgow.

Dalmuir is the northern-most area of Clydebank, a town in West Dunbartonshire. It is neighboured by the village of Old Kilpatrick, the Mountblow and Parkhall areas of Clydebank, as well as the town centre. It has a 5-line railway station, Dalmuir railway station, on the North Clyde Line. Before being annexed to the growing shipbuilding town of Clydebank, early Dalmuir was a town in its own right and host to Richard Collins' paper mill, which opened in 1747 on the banks of the Duntocher Burn. Also, The Beardmore shipbuilding and engineering works attracted a large population to settle in the area. It's most well-known area is Dalmuir Park.

Dumbarton is a burgh in Scotland, lying on the north bank of the River Clyde where the River Leven flows into the Clyde estuary. Dumbarton is split between the council areas of Argyll and Bute and West Dunbartonshire. As of 2006, the town had an estimated population of 19,990 and forms a conurbation with Alexandria, Bonhill and Renton with a combined estimated population of 44,690.
