Inverclyde is one of 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders onto Renfrewshire and North Ayrshire, and is otherwise surrounded by the Firth of Clyde. Inverclyde is one of three council areas contained within the boundaries of the historic Renfrewshire, the other two being East Renfrewshire and a Renfrewshire area with reduced boundaries. The older Renfrewshire still remains in the form of a registration county and lieutenancy area covering Inverclyde.

Gourock is a burgh in Inverclyde, Scotland. It has in the past functioned as a seaside resort on the Firth of Clyde. Its principal function today, however, is as a popular residential area, extending contiguously from Greenock, with a railway terminus and ferry services across the Clyde.

Greenock is a large town and former burgh of barony in the Inverclyde council area of western Scotland. It forms part of a contiguous urban area with Gourock to the west and Port Glasgow to the east. Greenock's population was recorded as being 45,467 in the 2001 census, a decrease from about 78,000 in 1966. It lies on the south bank of the Clyde at the "Tail of the Bank" where the River Clyde expands into the Firth of Clyde, and is in what was the county of Renfrewshire.

Kilmacolm is a village in the council area of Inverclyde and the historic county of Renfrewshire in the west Central Lowlands of Scotland. It lies on the northern slope of the Gryffe Valley seven miles south-east of Greenock and around fourteen miles west of the city of Glasgow. The village stands distinct from a belt of other nearby villages which together form a number of commuter settlements serving the nearby urban centres. Kilmacolm retains its own community with a small commercial centre and is also reputed to have more millionaires per capita than any other town in Scotland.

Port Glasgow is the second largest town in the Inverclyde council area of Scotland. The population according to the 1991 census for Port Glasgow was 19426 persons and in the 2001 census was 16617 persons. It is located immediately to the east of Greenock and was previously a burgh in the former county of Renfrew.

Quarrier's Village is a small settlement in Inverclyde. It lies within the Gryffe Valley, falling into the civil parish of Kilmacolm, although geographically slightly closer to Bridge of Weir. It is now a residential commuter village, with many residents working in and around Glasgow. The community itself sits very much on the border with the Renfrewshire council area. The village formerly served as the Orphans Homes of Scotland.
