East Renfrewshire is one of 32 council areas of Scotland. It was
within the county of Renfrewshire until reorganisation in 1975. The
authority was formed in 1996, as a successor to the Eastwood district, along
with Barrhead, which came from Renfrew district. It borders onto North
Ayrshire, East Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire and the City of
Glasgow. Although no longer a county, Renfrewshire still remains the
registration county and lieutenancy area of East Renfrewshire..
Barrhead is a town in East
Renfrewshire. 8 miles southwest of Glasgow on the edge of the Gleniffer
Braes. As of the 2001 census its population was 19,813. Historically, most
of what is now Barrhead lay within the parish of Neilston, in the county of
Renfrew. The name Barrhead derives from the agricultural term Barr meaning
long ploughed furrows for cultivation of crops. The original homestead or
hamlet was literally situated at the head of barrs and became known as
Barrhead.
Newton Mearns is a small suburban town within East Renfrewshire. It lies 7
