Sheepwalk House

Sheepwalk House was built in 1727 and was owned by the Earl of Wicklow, who chose this site from his vast estate because it commanded a magnificent view of the sea and the harbour town of Arklow. The valley below the house was the encampment of the Puritan Army in 1649 and Cromwell's stone stands in the garden to commemorate this event. Sheepwalk House was also the birthplace of Daniel Murray in 1768, who became Archbishop of Dublin from 1823 to 1852. Although the house has been extended and re-styled many times over the years, it still retains all of its charm and most of its original features, the sweeping staircase, cast iron fireplaces and the shuttered windows.
