County Westmeath is a county situated in the Irish midlands, also popularly
called the "Lake county" in the western part of the province of Leinster.
The county was once part of the ancient province of Meath
and later of County Meath. This association ended in 1543 when County
Westmeath was created under the Counties of Meath and Westmeath Act.
Athlone is a town that lies on
the River Shannon near the southern extremity of Lough Ree, Republic of
Ireland. Athlone, along with Mullingar and Tullamore is one of the largest
towns in central Ireland and also the commercial capital of the Irish
midlands[3], and is located close to the geographical centre of Ireland, on
the border of two counties, Roscommon and Westmeath, which are in the
provinces of Connacht and Leinster respectively. It has a population of
17,544.
Castlepollard is a small town
with a population of under 1000 in the north of County Westmeath in Ireland,
near Mullingar. One of the best known residents of Castlepollard is
businessman and former TD for Westmeath, Senator Donie Casssidy. The village
has also a growing Polish community.
Delvin is a small town in north County Westmeath, Ireland located on the N52
road at a junction with the N51 to Navan. The town is 20 km from Mullingar
(along the N52) The original Delvin Castle (aka Nugent Castle), now in ruin,
is believed to have been built in 1181 by Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath for
his brother-in-law, Gilbert de Nugent.
Glasson is a small village of
216 inhabitants (2002 census) situated in rural County Westmeath, Ireland,
10 km (6 mi) north of Athlone, on the N55 national secondary road, not far
from the shores of Lough Ree. A small river known as the River Tullaghan
flows through the northern end of the village and then flows south to
Killinure Lough, a part of Lough Ree.
Horseleap is a town situated
upon the Offaly, Westmeath county border in Ireland, on the R446, formerly
the main Dublin to Galway road. The village itself possesses a church,
primary school, a garden centre, a pub, and a petrol station. Horseleap
dates back to the 12th century steeped in Ui Neill, Geoghegan history.
Kilbeggan is a town located
on the River Brosna in County Westmeath, Ireland. The N6 and N52 roads
intersect in the town. Today, the town serves as a service centre for the
local farming community, hosts some light industry, and is seen increasingly
as a Dublin commuter town, particularly since the extension of the M4
motorway west of the city. Mercy Convent is situated in the town.
Moate is a town in County
Westmeath, Ireland. The town is situated the N6 route between Kinnegad and
Galway. It is a notorious traffic bottleneck on this route and is scheduled
to be bypassed when the Kilbeggan-Athlone section of the upgraded N6 opens
in 2008. A disused railway runs through the town, built by the Midland Great
Western Railway to connect Dublin and Galway (now served by another route).
Mullingar is the
administrative centre of County Westmeath, Ireland and the seat of the Roman
Catholic Diocese of Meath. Local government affairs are administered for the
county from the town and county council buildings. Mullingar is famous for
the neighbouring lakes, Lough Owel and Lough Ennell, which attract many
anglers, as well as Lough Derravaragh. Lough Derravaragh is best known for
its connection with the Irish legend of the Children of Lir.
Rochfortbridge is a rapidly
expanding village in County Westmeath, Ireland with a population of 1,382 in
2002. It is were the R400 crosses the R446 regional road (formerly the N6
national primary route, which recently bypassed the village). It is rapidly
becoming part of the Dublin Commuter Belt.
