County Kerry is a south western county of the Republic of Ireland.
Informally referred to as The Kingdom, it forms part of the Irish province
of Munster. With an area of 4,746 km² (1,832 square miles), it is bordered
by County Limerick to the east and County Cork to the south-east. The county
town is Tralee. One of Ireland's most famous towns, Killarney, is located in
Kerry. The Lakes of Killarney, an area of outstanding natural beauty, are
located in Killarney National Park. The tip of the Dingle Peninsula is the
most westerly point in both mainland Ireland and Europe. Likewise, Fenit,
the port of Tralee, is the most westerly commercial shipping port in
Europe.. Ballybunion is
a coastal village in County Kerry, Republic of Ireland, 15 km (9 miles) from
the town of Listowel. There are castle ruins near the town, although all
that remains is a single wall, and two golf courses in the area including
the famous Ballybunion Golf Club, a top class Links course founded in 1893
and host course to the Murphys Irish Open in 2000 and Palmer Cup in 2004.
According to the Central Statistics Office, Ballybunion had a population of
1329 in 2002.
Caherciveen alternate spellings Cahersiveen, Caherciveen or Cahirsiveen -is
a town in County Kerry, Republic of Ireland. It is located in the deep south
on the Iveragh peninsula on southwest coast of Ireland near Valentia Island.
Caherciveen is connected to the Irish road network by the N70 national
secondary route. Caherciveen has a population of 1294 (CSO 2006).
Castlegregory is a village in
County Kerry, Ireland. It is situated on the north side of the Dingle
Peninsula, halfway between Tralee and Dingle. Castlegregory has a population
of 205 (CSO 2006).The village is located at the foot of a sandy peninsula
called the Maharees separating Brandon Bay to the west from Tralee Bay on
the east, off the peninsula are a number small islands, called the Seven
Hoggs, or the Maharee Islands. A small fishing harbour is located at
Fahamore on Scraggane Bay, about 5 km outside the village at the tip of the
Maharees peninsula. The village is surrounded by the mountains of the Dingle
peninsula and overlooked directly by Beenoskee and Stradbally Mountains.
Castlemaine is a small town
in County Kerry, southwest Ireland. It lies 3.5 km north of Milltown on the
N70 national secondary road between Killorglin and Tralee.
Dingle is a town in County
Kerry in the Republic of Ireland, on the Atlantic coast some 50 kilometres
(30 mi) west-south-west of Tralee and 80 kilometres (50 mi) west-north-west
of Killarney. The town is situated on a natural harbour below Slievanea
mountain on the large Dingle peninsula, which lies south of the River
Shannon and north of the Ring of Kerry.
John Street, Dingle Principal industries in the town are tourism, fishing
and farming. In 2006 Dingle had a population of 1,920. Dingle is situated in
a Gaeltacht region.
Kenmare is a small town in
the south of County Kerry. Kenmare is located at the head of Kenmare Bay
where the Roughty River flows into the sea, and at the junction of the
Iveragh Peninsula and the Beara Peninsula. The bay is more commonly called
the Kenmare River.
Killarney is a town in County
Kerry, southwestern Ireland. The town is located north of the MacGillicuddy
Reeks, on the northeastern shore of the Lough Lein which are part of
Killarney National Park. The town is home to St. Mary's Cathedral, Ross
Castle, Muckross Abbey, Torc Waterfall and Gap of Dunloe. Killarney was
awarded the "Best Kept Town" award for 2007.
Killorglin is a town on the
Ring of Kerry, in County Kerry, Ireland. It is located on the river Laune,
which boasts a rowing club and a new boathouse. The population of Killorglin
is 1359 (CSO 2002) although this expands considerably during Puck Fair due
to visitors and returning emigrants. Killorglin is a major activity centre
for Kerry and has a number of tourist hostels on Dromin Hill and also has
one of the last inn chains started by Charles Bianconi. It is right in the
centre of the town
Listowel is a market town in
County Kerry, Ireland, and is situated on the River Feale, 28 km (17 miles)
from the county town, Tralee. The combined population of Listowel Urban and
Rural Districts is 22,668; the town itself has a population of 3,589 (CSO
census 2002).
Milltown is a small town
between major towns Tralee and Killarney in County Kerry, in the Munster
province of Ireland. Milltown stands roughly four miles away from Killorglin
- another town which hosts the annual festival "Puck Fair". Milltown is
packed with seven pubs, two take-away restaurants, a vet, a butchers shop, a
local church, three schools and more. Milltown itself hosts a number of
annual festivals and events including the World Bodhran Championships, which
is in fact quite ironic, considering that Milltown itself could best be
described as a large village.
Portmagee `is a village in
County Kerry, Republic of Ireland. The village is located on the west coast
of Ireland, on Kerry's Iveragh peninsula. south of Valentia Island. The name
in Irish means 'the ferry', referring to its purpose as a crossing point to
the island. Access to Valentia Island is now via a bridge from Portmagee.
Tarbert is a village in the
north of County Kerry, with woodland to the south and the Shannon estuary to
the north. It lies on the N69 coast road that runs along the estuary from
Limerick before turning inland at Tarbert towards Listowel.
Tralee is the county town of
County Kerry, in the south west corner of Ireland. The town is situated on
the northern side of the neck of the Dingle Peninsula. Tralee is the largest
town in Kerry. The town's population including suburbs was 22,744 at the
2006 census making it the 7th largest town in Ireland (outside of the 5
cities).
Valentia Island is one
of Europe's westernmost inhabited locations, lying off the Iveragh Peninsula
in the southwest of County Kerry in Ireland. It is linked to the mainland by
a bridge at Portmagee, as well as by a ferry which sails from Reenard Point
to Knightstown, the island's main settlement. The permanent population of
the island is 650, and the island is approximately 11 km long by 3 km wide. |
