Staffordshire (abbreviated Staffs) is a landlocked county in the West
Midlands region of England. The county town is Stafford. Part of the
National Forest lies within its borders. It adjoins the ceremonial counties
of Cheshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, West Midlands,
Worcestershire, and Shropshire. The largest city in ceremonial Staffordshire
is Stoke-on-Trent. Lichfield also has city status, though is considerably
smaller. Wolverhampton and Walsall used to be in Staffordshire but are now
within the West Midlands. Major towns include Burton upon Trent,
Newcastle-under-Lyme, Cannock, Tamworth, and Stafford itself.
Alton is a village in the county
of Staffordshire, England. It is famous for the theme park Alton Towers,
built on the site of Alton Mansion (also named Alton Towers) owned by the
Earls of Shrewsbury and designed by Augustus Pugin. The village is located
on the eastern side of the Churnet Valley and contains numerous buildings of
architectural interest. The Round-House, Alton Castle (now a Catholic youth
retreat centre), St Peters Church, The Malt House, St Johns Church and of
course Alton Mansion.
Lichfield is a small city in
Staffordshire. One of seven civil parishes with city status in England,
Lichfield is situated 25 km (16 miles) north of Birmingham and 200 km (124
miles) northwest of central London. Lichfield is notable for its
three-spired cathedral and as the birthplace of Dr. Johnson, the writer of
the first authoritative Dictionary of the English Language.
Newcastle-under-Lyme, known
simply as "castle" to many local people, is a market town in Staffordshire,
England, and is the principal town of the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme.
It is part of The Potteries Urban Area and North Staffordshire. In the 2001
census the town had a population of 73,944. It is not to be confused with
the larger city of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Stafford is the county town
of Staffordshire in England. It lies in the north of the West Midlands
region, between Wolverhampton and Stoke-on-Trent. The population of Stafford
was given in the 2001 census as 63,681, with that of the wider borough of
Stafford as 124,531. The oldest building in Stafford is St Chad's church.
Opened in 1908, Victoria Park is a 13 acre (53,000 m²) Edwardian riverside
park with an open-air paddling pool, bowling green, bird cages, greenhouse
and two play areas.
Stoke, or to give it its full
name, Stoke-upon-Trent is a town in the City of Stoke-on-Trent, in the
ceremonial county of Staffordshire. Stoke-on-Trent's city centre is,
however, usually regarded as being the nearby town of Hanley which is, and
has been since federation, the most commercially important of the Six Towns.
Uttoxeter is a small market
town in East Staffordshire, in the West Midlands region of England. The
current population is approximately 12,000, though new developments in the
town will increase this figure. Uttoxeter lies close to the River Dove and
is near to the cities of Stoke-on-Trent, Derby and Lichfield. It was twinned
with Raisdorf in Germany. |
