South Yorkshire is a metropolitan county, located in the Yorkshire and the Humber region of England. South Yorkshire is divided into four local government districts; they are the City of Sheffield, the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. The county borders Derbyshire, West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

Adwick le Street is a small town in South Yorkshire. It is situated a few miles to the north west of Doncaster, and is within the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster.

Armthorpe is a village and forms the eastern edge of the Doncaster urban sprawl within the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

Barnsley is a town in South Yorkshire, lying on the River Dearne, approximately twenty kilometres north of Sheffield. It is Commonly referred to as "The Tarn" by many of its residents. It is between junctions 36 and 37 of the M1 motorway and has a railway station served by the Hallam and Penistone Lines. It is the main town in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley

Bawtry is a small market town which lies at the point where the Great North Road crosses the River Idle in South Yorkshire. The name comes from the Anglo-Saxon, and means 'Balda's tree'. It is located in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster on the border with Nottinghamshire, and is situated between Bircotes and Misson at the conjunction of the A614, A631 and A638 roads. The county boundary with Nottinghamshire runs just to the south of the town and for this reason the southern most house on the Great North Road is named 'Number One Yorkshire'.

Brierley is a town and a civil parish in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley (part of South Yorkshire), on the border with West Yorkshire. It lies to the south-west of Hemsworth, off the A628 road, and is located at approximately 53° 35' 40" North, 1° 23' West, at an elevation of around 100 metres above sea level.

Conisbrough is a small town located roughly midway between Doncaster and Rotherham in South Yorkshire. It is built alongside the River Don. Conisbrough contains what is believed to be the oldest building in South Yorkshire: the probably 8th century Anglo-Saxon St Peter's Church. It also contains one of South Yorkshire's most popular tourist destinations: Conisbrough Castle.

According to the 2001 census the urban sub-area of Doncaster had a population of 67,977 - together with Bentley, Armthorpe and Kirk Sandall it forms an urban area with a population of 127,851. The wider Metropolitan Borough has a population of around 290,000.

Edlington is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, lying to the southwest of Doncaster. Since 1974 Edlington has been part of the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in the Metropolitan county of South Yorkshire, though it was not part of the County Borough of Doncaster beforehand. It lies within the historic boundaries of the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Hoyland is a town near Barnsley in Northern England. The town developed from the hamlets of Upper Hoyland, Hoyland, and Hoyland Common. The town has also been known as Nether Hoyland. That name was given to it when to prevent confusion with High Hoyland. Hoyland is part of the metropolitan borough of Barnsley in the metropolitan county of South Yorkshire, but it lies within the historic boundaries of West Riding of Yorkshire.

Maltby is a town of 17,980 inhabitants in a rural area about seven miles east of Rotherham, in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It lies on the A631 between Hellaby and Tickhill at the junction with the A634 from Blyth, close to Junction 1 of the M18 motorway.

Royston is a town in South Yorkshire. Historically it was in the West Riding of Yorkshire, but is now in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley, on the border with West Yorkshire. It is part of the Barnsley Central borough constituency. Royston lies on the Barnsley Canal, and on the intersection of the B6132 and B6428 roads. It is located due north of Monk Bretton, The Trans Pennine Trail runs through it along the canal bank.

Swinton is a small town in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, in South Yorkshire on part of the west bank of the River Don.

Tickhill is a small town in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster (part of South Yorkshire, England), on the border with Nottinghamshire. It lies 8 miles south of Doncaster, between Maltby and Harworth, on the conjunction of the A631 and A60 roads, and adjacent to the A1(M) motorway.

Wombwell is a small town near Barnsley, located in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire. It has a railway station (formerly Wombwell West) serving the Penistone and Hallam Lines. Until 1959 it had an another station (Wombwell Central) on the Barnsley-Doncaster line that was closed when that line lost its passenger service. Wombwell was home to two collieries, Wombwell main and Mitchells main. Wombwell is close to the large shopping and leisure facilities of Cortonwood, and also has a number of local business' from cafes to travel agents like Travel Empire and High Street Chains like Wilkinson's, on its High Street.
