London is the capital and
largest urban area of England and the United Kingdom. the city has
become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world which
has increased over the years due to the city's economic growth. London
boasts three World Heritage Sites; these include Palace of Westminster,
the Tower of London, and the historic settlement of Greenwich. It is one
of the world's leading business, financial, and cultural centres, and
its influence in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion and
the arts all contribute to its status as a major global city. London has
an official population of 7,512,400 (as of mid-2006) within the
boundaries of Greater London.
The City of London is a
geographically small city within Greater London. The City of London is
England's smallest ceremonial county by both population and area covered
and is the second smallest British city in both population and size,
after St David's in Wales.
The London Borough of
Camden is a borough of London, which forms part of Inner London.
The 2001 census gives Camden a population of 198,000, although this is
now acknowledged to be an undercount and the figure has since been
revised to 202,600.
Greenwich is a district
in south-east London, England, on the south bank of the River Thames in
the London Borough of Greenwich. It is best known for its maritime
history and as giving its name to the Greenwich Meridian (0° longtitude)
and Greenwich Mean Time.
London Borough of Hackney
is in East London, and forms part of inner London. It included the
districts of Hackney, Clapton, Homerton, Dalston and Kingsland. It also
included Stoke Newington Common, and the entire eastern side of Stoke
Newington High Street.
The London Borough of
Hammersmith and Fulham is a London borough in West London and forms part
of Inner London. The borough includes the areas: Fulham , Hammersmith,
Barons Court, Hurlingham, Old Oak Common, Parsons Green, Sands End,
Shepherd's Bush, Walham Green, West Kensington, and White City.
Islington is the central
district of the London Borough of Islington. It is an inner-city
district in London, spanning from Islington High Street to Highbury
Fields, encompassing the area around the busy Upper Street.
The Royal Borough of
Kensington and Chelsea, located 2.8 miles (4.5 km) west of Charing
Cross. An affluent and densely-populated area, its commercial heart is
Kensington High Street and it contains the well-known museum district of
South Kensington. To the north, Kensington is bordered by Notting Hill.
To the east, by Brompton and Knightsbridge. To the south by Chelsea and
Earl's Court. To the west by Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush.
Lewisham is a district in south-east London, England and the principal
settlement of the London Borough of Lewisham. Lewisham is a major
transport hub, lying on the A20 road towards Dover and at the start of
A21 to Hastings, with its own bus station, railway station and the
southern terminus of the Docklands Light Railway. Tube lines run into
the north of the borough at New Cross and are due to be expanded south
as part of the East London Line extension.
The London Borough of
Southwark is located directly south of the River Thames and forms part
of Inner London. The borough borders the City of London and the London
Borough of Tower Hamlets to the north, the London Borough of Lambeth to
the west and the London Borough of Lewisham to the east. To the south is
the London Borough of Bromley and the London Borough of Croydon.
The London Borough of
Tower Hamlets lies to the east of the City of London, and north of the
River Thames in East London. It includes much of the redeveloped
Docklands region of London, including West India Docks and Canary Wharf.
Many of the tallest buildings in London are located on the Isle of Dogs
in the south of the borough. Tower Hamlets is one of five London
boroughs which have been designated host boroughs for the 2012 Summer
Olympics.
The London Borough of Wandsworth is a London borough in south west
London, England and forms part of Inner London. The borough borders the
London Borough of Lambeth to the east, the London Borough of Merton and
the Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames to the south, the London
Borough of Richmond upon Thames to the west and to the north (across the
River Thames) three boroughs, namely the London Borough of Hammersmith
and Fulham, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the City of
Westminster.
The City of Westminster
is a borough of London with city status. It is located west of the City
of London and north of the River Thames, and forms part of Inner London
and the bulk of London's central area. The city contains most of
London's West End and is the seat of the United Kingdom's government,
with the Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace, Whitehall, and the
Royal Courts of Justice.
Waterloo is a place in
the London Borough of Lambeth, although the area is now more commonly
known as Waterloo, after the railway station whose viaduct separates the
former centre of the village from the River Thames. Lambeth is the site
of St Thomas' Hospital, the London Eye, the Royal National Theatre, the
Royal Festival Hall, County Hall as well as Waterloo station.
Barking and Dagenham is a
London borough in East London and forms part of Outer London.
The borough borders the London Borough of Havering to the east with the
River Rom forming part of the boundary. It borders the London Borough of
Newham to the west with the River Roding forming much of the border. To
the south is the River Thames which forms the borough's boundary with
the London Borough of Bexley and the London Borough of Greenwich. To the
north the borough forms a thin protrusion between Havering and the
London Borough of Redbridge in order to encompass Chadwell Heath.
Barnet is a London
borough in North London and forms part of Outer London. It borders
Hertfordshire to the north and five other London boroughs: Harrow and
Brent to the west, Camden and Haringey to the south-east and Enfield to
the east.
Bexley is a London
borough in south east Greater London which forms, with other boroughs,
part of Outer London. Within London, it has common borders with the
London Borough of Bromley to the south, the London Borough of Greenwich
to the west and the River Thames is the northern boundary with the
London Borough of Havering and the London Borough of Barking and
Dagenham. To the east there is a boundary with the Dartford borough in
Kent.
Brent is a London
borough in north west London and forms part of Outer London. It borders
Harrow to the northwest, Barnet to the northeast, Camden to the east and
Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster to
the south.
According to the 2001 census, the Borough of Brent has the country's
highest percentage of people born outside of the UK (46.53%).
Bromley is a London
Borough of outer southeast London, England. It has an area of 59 square
miles (153 km²), of which the majority is green belt land. Most of the
settlement is in the north and west of the borough, with an outlier at
Biggin Hill in the far south. The borough shares borders with the London
Boroughs of Lewisham, Greenwich and Bexley to the north, Southwark and
Lambeth in the extreme northwest, Croydon to the west, and the County of
Kent to the south and east.
Croydon is a London borough in South London, England and part of Outer
London. It covers an area of 34 square miles (87 km²) and it is the
largest London borough by population. It is the southernmost borough of
London. The borough is now one of London's leading business, financial
and cultural centres, and its influence in entertainment and the arts
all contribute to its status as a major national town. People come from
around the country for the attractions which include a multitude of
shopping, nightlife, and entertainment venues.
Ealing is an Outer London
borough in West London. The London Borough of Ealing borders the London
Borough of Hillingdon to the west, the London Borough of Harrow and the
London Borough of Brent to the north, the London Borough of Hammersmith
and Fulham to the east and the London Borough of Hounslow to the south.
The London Borough of
Haringey is a north London borough bordered by the boroughs of Barnet,
Camden, Enfield, Islington, Hackney and Waltham Forest. By some
definitions it is classed as Inner London; by others it is counted as
part of Outer London. It covers an area of more than 11 square miles
(28.5 km²). Some of the more familiar local landmarks include Alexandra
Palace, Bruce Castle and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
Hillingdon is the
westernmost borough in Greater London,. It is home to Brunel University
and London Heathrow Airport. The London Borough of Hillingdon is
responsible for 239 parks and open spaces within its boundaries. Since
much of the area is within the Green belt, and it is the least-populated
of all the London boroughs
The London Borough of
Hounslow is a peripheral London borough in the south-west of the
conurbation; as such part of the Green Belt lies within its boundaries.
It has one of London's largest Nature reserves as well as many smaller
gardens and sports grounds.
The Royal Borough of
Kingston upon Thames is a borough in south-west London, England. The
main town in the borough is Kingston upon Thames, but it covers a wider
area also including places such as Surbiton, Chessington, New Malden and
Tolworth. The main town has existed on the banks of the River Thames in
South-west London for many hundreds, if not thousands of years. Many
Roman relics have also been found in the surrounding areas.
Merton is a London
borough in south west London. The main commercial centres in Merton are
Mitcham, Morden and Wimbledon, of which Wimbledon is the largest. Other
smaller centres include Raynes Park, Colliers Wood, South Wimbledon,
Wimbledon Park and Pollards Hill.
The London Borough of
Newham is a London borough in East London, within Greater London. It is
situated five miles east of the City of London, and is north of the
River Thames. Newham has the highest young population and one of the
lowest indigenous white populations in the country according to the 2001
Census.
The London Borough of
Redbridge is a London borough in North East London. It is twinned with
the Haute-Normandie region of France. The name comes from a bridge over
the River Roding; it was made of red brick, unlike other bridges in the
area made of white stone.
Richmond upon Thames is a London borough in south west London, which
forms part of Outer London. It can been seen from a map that the borough
is not entirely urbanised. There are some large areas of open space
within the borough boundaries. The main suburban developments are
Hampton and Teddington in the south, Twickenham, St Margarets and
Whitton in the central area west of the River Thames and the
Richmond-Kew-Mortlake-Barnes corridor across the loop of the river. It
is the only London borough to straddle the Thames with districts on both
sides of the river.
Sutton is a London borough in outer southwest London. The borough was
formed in 1965 by the merger of the Municipal Borough of Sutton and
Cheam with the Municipal Borough of Beddington and Carshalton Urban
District which had previously been part of Surrey.
Waltham Forest is a
London borough in East London, and forms part of Outer London. It is a
mix of built-up residential development and a fifth of the borough is
made up of forestland, reservoirs, open space, parks and playing fields.
It is located between part of Epping Forest in the east and the River
Lee in the west which form two green corridors, passing into London from
the surrounding countryside. It is sometimes confused with the adjoining
Epping Forest district, which is not in Greater London. Waltham Forest
is one of five London boroughs which have been designated host boroughs
