Kent is a county in southeast England, and is one of the home counties. It
borders East Sussex, Surrey and Greater London and has a defined boundary
with Essex in the middle of the River Thames estuary. The ceremonial county
boundaries of Kent include the shire county of Kent and the unitary borough
of Medway. Kent has a nominal border with France halfway through the Channel
Tunnel. Maidstone is its county town and historically Rochester and
Canterbury have been accorded city status though only the latter still holds
it. The town of Ashford
lies on the River Great Stour, M20 motorway, South Eastern Main Line and
High Speed 1 railways, in the borough of Ashford, located just south of the
North Downs, in Kent, England. Its agricultural market is one of the most
important in the county.
Broadstairs is a coastal town
on the Isle of Thanet in East Kent, England, 76 miles east of London with a
population of about 22,000. Situated between Margate and Ramsgate, it is one
of the seaside resorts on the Isle of Thanet, known as the "Jewel in
Thanet's crown". The town crest motto is 'Stella Maris - Star of the Sea'.
Canterbury is a city in
eastern Kent in the South East region of England. The city is the seat of
the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Primate of All England, head of the Church
of England and of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Canterbury is now
by-passed by the A2 London to Dover Road. It is about 45 miles from the M25
London orbital motorway, and 61 miles from central London. The other main
road through Canterbury is the A28 from Ashford to Ramsgate and Margate.
Chatham is a large town that
has developed around an important naval dockyard on the east bank of the
River Medway to the southeast of London in Kent, England. Together with
Rainham, Gillingham and Rochester it is today part of the Medway Towns
conurbation.
Cranbrook is an old market
town in the Tunbridge Wells borough of Kent in South East England. It is
also the smallest town in Kent. It is on the Maidstone to Hastings road and
five miles north of Hawkhurst. The smaller settlements of Swattenden,
Colliers Green and Hartley lie within the parish.
Dartford is the principal town in the borough of Dartford. It is situated in
the northwest corner of Kent in South East England, 16 miles (25 km) east
south-east of central London. The town centre is situated in a valley
through which the River Darent flows, and where the old road from London to
Dover crossed.
Deal is a town in Kent,
England. It lies on the English Channel eight miles north-east of Dover. It
is a small fishing community situated between Dover and Ramsgate. Closely
associated with Deal are the villages of Kingsdown and Walmer.
Dover is a major port on the
south-east coast of England. Situated in the county of Kent, it faces France
across the English Channel. Dover is famous for its white cliffs, which are
made of chalk. The cliffs gave Britain its nickname of Albion, meaning
"white".
Edenbridge is a town and civil parish in the Sevenoaks district of Kent. The
town's name derives from Old English language "Eadhelmsbrigge" ("Eadhelm's
Bridge" in Modern English). It is located on the Kent/Surrey border on the
upper floodplain of the River Medway and gives its name to the latter's
tributary, the River Eden. Edenbridge has a population of around 8,000.
Edenbridge has had four mills over the centuries, Haxted Mill and Honour's
Mill on the River Eden, Christmas Mill on a tributary of the Eden, and a
windmill to the south of the town. All four mill buildings survive, but now
converted to other uses.
Faversham is a town in Kent,
England, in the district of Swale, roughly halfway between Sittingbourne and
Canterbury. The parish of Faversham includes an ancient sea port and market
town, some 48 miles east of London, off the London to Dover A2 road, 18
miles east north-east of Maidstone and 9 miles west of Canterbury.
Folkestone is a resort town
on the south coast of Kent, England, traditionally known as "The Garden
Coast". Situated at the foot of the North Downs, the town has stunning views
of the surrounding countryside as well as the coast of France. A hundred
years ago the town was a Royal holiday destination and nowadays the Channel
Tunnel connects Folkestone to mainland Europe.
Gillingham (pronunciation is
a town in the unitary authority of Medway in South East England. It is part
of the ceremonial county of Kent. The town includes the settlements of
Brompton, Hempstead, Rainham, Rainham Mark, Twydall and Lidsing.
Gravesend is a town in
northwest Kent, England, on the south bank of the Thames, opposite Tilbury
in Essex. Gravesend is the administrative town of the Borough of Gravesham.
An exact replica of the Pocahontas statue by Partridge was dedicated as a
memorial to the princess at St. George's Church in Gravesend.
Maidstone is a l Borough in Kent. The Borough covers an area generally to
the east and south of the town of Maidstone: as far north as the M2
motorway; east down the M20 to Lenham; south to a line including Staplehurst
and Headcorn; and west towards Tonbridge. Generally speaking, it lies
between the North Downs and the Weald, and covers the central part of the
county. The M20 motorway crosses it from west to east, as does High Speed 1
Margate is a seaside resort town within the Thanet district of East Kent,
England. It lies 38.1 miles (61.3 km) east-northeast of Maidstone, along the
North Foreland of the coastline of the United Kingdom. Margate, has been a
leading seaside resort for at least 250 years, drawing Londoners to its
sandy beaches. It was the first resort to introduce bathing machines and
deck chairs, in 1898. In more recent years, as tourists have travelled
further a field, Margate's unemployment rate has become higher than much of
the rest of southeast England.
Ramsgate is a seaside town on the Isle of Thanet in east Kent, England. It
was one of the great English seaside towns of the 19th century and is a
member of the ancient confederation of Cinque ports. It has a population of
around 40,000. Ramsgate's main attraction is its coastline and its main
industries are tourism and fishing. The town has one of the largest marinas
on the English south coast and Port Ramsgate has provided cross channel
ferries for many years.
Rochester is a town within
the unitary authority area of Medway in South East England. It is part of
the ceremonial county of Kent and is located at the lowest bridging point of
the River Medway about 30 miles (48 km) from London. The town is known for
its cathedral and castle
The Romney Marsh is a sparsely-populated wetland area in the counties of
Kent and East Sussex in the south-east of England. It covers about 100
square miles. The best way to see the Marsh is on a cycle, the almost
flat terrain, the narrow almost deserted lanes, make it ideal for family
jaunts. National cycle route 2 passes through the area, the section between
Rye and Lydd is mostly off road, it then uses quiet lanes from Lydd to
Hythe, where it possible to cycle along the sea wall to Folkestone and
ultimately (off road) to reach Dover.
Sittingbourne is an industrial town about eight miles (12.9 km) east of
Gillingham, beside the Roman Watling Street off a creek in the Swale, a
channel separating the Isle of Sheppey from mainland Kent. The town is
growing rapidly due to a number of large residential developments, and its
train line links to central London in around an hour.
Sheerness is a town located
beside the mouth of the River Medway on the northwest corner of the Isle of
Sheppey in north Kent, England. With a population of 12,000 it is the
largest town on the island.
Tenterden is a small town in
the Ashford District of Kent, England. It stands on the edge of the Weald,
overlooking the valley of the River Rother. Tenterden's broad tree-lined
High Street offers a selection of shopping facilities, making the town a
centre for a number of villages in the area. Tourist attractions draw the
visitors: especially the Kent & East Sussex Railway line to Bodiam; a local
vineyard; and the Tenterden Folk Festival, held on the weekend of the first
Saturday in October each year since 1993.
Royal Tunbridge Wells (often called simply Tunbridge Wells) is a Wealden
town in west Kent in England, just north of the border with East Sussex. It
has a population of approximately 75,000 (2001 census) The town centre may
be considered in two halves: the southern, and older section; and the
Victorian northern area. The southern part, mainly Georgian in origin,
contains at its heart the "Village" area. It is here that The Pantiles can
be found, which contain the spa which made the town so famous.
Whitstable is a seaside town
in northeast Kent, England. It is 8 kilometres (5 mi) north of the city of
Canterbury and 3 kilometres (2 mi) west of the seaside town of Herne Bay. It
is part of the Canterbury Local Authority district, that is Canterbury City
Council and has a population of about 30,000. Known as the "Pearl of Kent",
Whitstable is famous for its oysters, which have been collected in the area
since at least Roman times. |
