Hampshire (abbr. Hants), is a county on the south coast of England. The
county borders Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey and West Sussex.
The county town is Winchester. The 2001 census gave the population of the
administrative county as 1.24 million. Hampshire is a popular holiday area,
with tourist attractions including its many seaside resorts, the maritime
area in Portsmouth, and the motor museum at Beaulieu. The New Forest
National Park lies within the borders, as does a large area of the South
Downs, which is also scheduled to become a National Park.
Alresford is a small town and
civil parish in Hampshire. It is situated some 12 km north-east of the city
of Winchester, and 20 km south-west of the town of Alton. In the 2001 census
the population of Alresford was 5200. New Alresford is linked to Alton by
the Mid Hants Watercress Railway, a steam worked heritage railway, and
served by Alresford railway station.
Alton is a small market town in Hampshire, to the southwest of Farnham. It
had a population of 16,584 at the 1991 census. Alton station is located on
the National Rail network at the end of the Alton Line with a regular
service to London Waterloo. Journey time is usually just over an hour,
stopping at Bentley, Farnham, Aldershot, Ash Vale, Brookwood and Woking.
Andover is a town in the
English county of Hampshire. The town is situated on the River Anton some
18.5 miles (30 km) west of the town of Basingstoke, 18.5 miles (30 km)
north-west of the city of Winchester and 25 miles (40 km) north of the city
of Southampton.. Andover is twinned with the towns of Redon in France, and
Goch in Germany.
Basingstoke is a town in
northeast Hampshire. It lies across a valley at the source of the River
Loddon. The town is 48 miles (77 km) southwest of London, 30 miles (48 km)
north of Southampton and 16 miles (25 km) southwest of Reading. Basingstoke
had an estimated population of 80,477 in 2006.
The market town of Fareham
lies in the south east of Hampshire, England, between the cities of
Southampton and Portsmouth, roughly in the centre of the South Hampshire
conurbation. It gives its name to the borough comprising the town and the
surrounding area. To the south lies Gosport, to the east Portchester, to the
north the M27 motorway and Wickham. Westwards lie Titchfield; Catisfield and
the Southampton area.
Hook is a large village
within the Hart district of northern Hampshire, England. It is situated 10
kilometres (6.2 mi) east of Basingstoke and 58 kilometres (36.0 mi)
northeast of Southampton, on the A30 national route, just north of Junction
5 of the M3 motorway. In 2001, Hook had a population of 7,321 (8,200 est.
2006). Hook's rail station offers direct rail links to both London Waterloo
and Southampton with indirect routes to Reading and Salisbury. Rail services
are provided by South West Trains.
The New Forest is an area of southern England which includes the largest
remaining tracts of unenclosed pasture land, heathland and old-growth forest
in the heavily-populated south east of England. The contiguous New Forest
habitat covers south west Hampshire and some of south Wiltshire.
New Milton is a market town
in south west Hampshire, England. The town has a small high street, which
has various shops to suit all residents, and also holds a very successful
market every Wednesday. Situated on the edge of the New Forest, the town is
about 8 miles (13 km) west of Lymington town centre and 12 miles (19 km)
east of Bournemouth town centre.
Petersfield is a market town
in the English county of Hampshire, situated on the northern border of the
South Downs. It is unique in that it is wholly within an Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty, soon to be part of the proposed South Downs National Park.
Portsmouth is a city of about
189,000 people located in the county of Hampshire on the southern coast of
England. It is commonly nicknamed Pompey. The Portsmouth Urban Area covers
an area with a population well over twice that of the city of Portsmouth
itself, and includes Fareham, Portchester, Gosport, Havant (which includes
the large suburb Leigh Park), Lee-on-the-Solent, Stubbington and
Waterlooville.
Romsey, is a small market
town, in the county of Hampshire. It is 8 miles (13 km) north-west of
Southampton and 11 miles (18 km) south-west of Winchester. Just under 13,000
people live in Romsey, which has an area of about 4.93 square kilometres.
Romsey lies on the River Test, which is famous for fly fishing,
predominantly trout. It is one of the principal towns in the Test Valley
Borough. A large Norman abbey dominates the centre of the town.
Southampton is the largest
city on the south coast of England. It is a major port and the closest city
to the New Forest. The city lies roughly in the centre of the coast, at the
northern-most point of Southampton Water where it is joined by the River
Test and River Itchen, with the River Hamble joining to the south of the
urban area. The city is situated approximately halfway between Bournemouth
and Portsmouth.
Stockbridge is a village in
Hampshire, United Kingdom. It is on the River Test, and in the Test Valley
district. The A30 road goes through the town, which once carried most of the
traffic from London to the South West. However, today most of the traffic
uses the A303 road to the north of Stockbridge, so much less traffic travels
through the village than did previously.
Twyford is a village and
civil parish in Hampshire, England, approximately three miles south of
Winchester and near the M3 motorway and Twyford Down. In 2001, the
population of the parish was 1,456.[1] The village lies on the River Itchen,
which passes through nearby watermeadows, and has been important
economically for its residents. The name "Twyford" means "two fords" and
from medieval times.
Winchester or Winton
(archaic) is a historic city in southern England, with a population of
around 40,000 within a 3-mile (4.8 km) radius of its centre. The city is at
the western end of the South Downs with the scenic River Itchen running
through it. The city is served by trains running from London Waterloo,
Weymouth, Brighton, Portsmouth, Southampton and the North. |
