| The
New Forest is an area of southern England which includes the largest
remaining tracts of unenclosed pasture land, heathland and old-growth forest
in the heavily-populated south east of England. The contiguous New Forest
habitat covers south west Hampshire and some of south Wiltshire. The forest
has many well kept cycle paths for the use of the large number of cyclists
that visit the forest each year. Many outlets are set up to handle the high
requirement for bicycle hire, with both Burley and Brockenhurst having
facilities. Beaulieu is a small village located on the south
eastern edge of the New Forest national park in Hampshire. Beaulieu village
has remained largely unspoilt by progress, and is a favorite tourist stop
for visitors to the New Forest, and also for birders seeking local
specialities like Dartford Warbler, Honey Buzzard and Hobby.
Brockenhurst is a village situated in the New Forest, Hampshire. The New
Forest is a national park and Brockenhurst is therefore surrounded by
woodland that attracts thousands of visitors all year around. The nearby
towns surrounding Brockenhurst are Lymington and Lyndhurst.
Burley is a village in the New Forest, Hampshire, with a wealth of tea
rooms, gift shops, art galleries and a Pick Your Own Farm. Burley has a long
connection with witches and during the late 1950s Sybil Leek, a
self-confessed white witch, lived in this village. Many of the gift shops
now sell witch-related gifts and ornaments.
Fordingbridge is a former market
town with a population of six thousand on the River Avon and the A338 road
in the west of Hampshire, near to the Dorset and Wiltshire borders and on
the edge of the New Forest. It is within easy reach of the city of
Salisbury, and the seaside resort of Bournemouth. The Avon Valley Path
passes through the town.
Highcliffe's climate is known locally for being extremely mild with warmer
winters and less rainfall than surrounding areas. This is one of the reasons
for its very high proportion of elderly residents, as it provides a nice
place to retire.
Hythe is a village near Southampton, Hampshire, England. It has a small
shopping area clustered around its High Street which includes a supermarket,
a public library, several charity shops, and a number of small independent
shops. The pier railway and ferry service across Southampton Water to
Southampton operates at half-hourly intervals throughout the day, and is the
oldest working pier train in the world.
Lymington on the west bank of
the Lymington River is a port on the Solent, in the New Forest district of
Hampshire. It is to the east of the South East Dorset conurbation, and faces
Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight which is connected to it by a car ferry,
operated by Wightlink. The town has a large tourist industry, based on
proximity to the New Forest and the harbour. It is a major yachting centre
with three marinas. According to the 2001 census the Lymington urban area
had a population of about 14,000.
Lyndhurst is a small town in the New Forest, Hampshire. It is often called
the "Capital of the New Forest" and is a popular tourist location with many
shops, cafés, pubs and hotels. Lyndhurst is also home to the New Forest
Museum. The nearest city is Southampton located around nine miles (14 km) to
the north-east. In 2001 Lyndhurst had a population of 2,973 people. Alice
Liddell, also known as Alice Hargreaves, the inspiration for Alice in Lewis
Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, lived in and around Lyndhurst
after her marriage to Reginald Hargreaves, and is buried in the graveyard of
the church of St. Michael & All Angels, Lyndhurst.
New Milton is a market town in
south west Hampshire, England. The town has a small high street, which has
various shops to suit all residents, and also holds a very successful market
every Wednesday. Situated on the edge of the New Forest, the town is about 8
miles (13 km) west of Lymington town centre and 12 miles (19 km) east of
Bournemouth town centre.
Ringwood is a town in Hampshire,
England, on the River Avon, west of the New Forest and north of Bournemouth.
The town was traditionally an agricultural centre, but since the closure of
its cattle market in 1989, it has increasingly become a dormitory town. The
BBC television comedy series "The Brittas Empire" was filmed at Ringwood
Health and Leisure Centre.
Sway is a village in Hampshire near Lymington. The village has a railway station on the
main line from Weymouth and Bournemouth to Southampton and London Waterloo
with train services operated by South West Trains. From Brockenhurst, one
can catch the "Lymington Flyer" services connect with the ferry to Yarmouth
on the Isle of Wight. |
