Gloucestershire is a county in South West England. The county comprises part
of the Cotswold Hills, part of the flat fertile valley of the River Severn,
and the entire Forest of Dean. The county town is the city of Gloucester,
and other principal towns include Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester, and
Tewkesbury. When considered as a ceremonial county, Gloucestershire borders
the preserved county of Gwent in Wales, and in England the ceremonial
counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire,
Wiltshire, Somerset and Bristol.
Bourton-on-the-Water is a
village in Gloucestershire, England in the picturesque Cotswolds area. It is
known affectionately as the Venice of the Cotswolds. Bourton has a number of
tourist attractions: The River Windrush runs through the middle of the
village, in landscaped setting and is spanned by several small but very
attractive road and footbridges. The model village is an exact 1:10
replica of the village and includes a model of the model village itself (a

Cheltenham is a large spa
town and borough in Gloucestershire, England, near Gloucester and
Cirencester. The town is located on the edge of the Cotswolds and has an
image of being respectable and wealthy. Cheltenham has been a health and
holiday spa town resort since the discovery of mineral springs there in
1716.
Chipping Campden is a small
market town within the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is
notable for its elegant terraced High Street, dating from the 14th – 17th
centuries.
The High Street is lined with honey-coloured limestone buildings, built from
the mellow locally quarried Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of fine
vernacular architecture. At its centre stands the Market Hall with its
splendid arches, built in 1627.
Cirencester pronounced is a
market town in Gloucestershire, England, 93 miles (150 km) west northwest of
London. Cirencester lies on the River Churn, a tributary of the River
Thames, and is the largest town in Cotswold District. It is home of the
Royal Agricultural College, the oldest agricultural college in the
English-speaking world founded in 1840. The town's Corinium Museum is
well-known for its extensive Roman collection.
Coleford is a small market
town in Gloucestershire, England in the west of the Forest of Dean which has
a population of 8,351 (2001 census). It is situated approximately four miles
to the East of the Welsh border on the English side, and is close to the Wye
Valley, a popular walking and canoeing area. The town is the administrative
centre of the Forest of Dean district.
Fairford is a small town in
Gloucestershire. It lies in the Cotswolds on the River Coln. RAF Fairford is
located near the town, as is the Cotswold Water Park.
Gloucester is a city and district in the English county of Gloucestershire,
close to the Welsh border, and on the River Severn. Gloucester is the county
town of Gloucestershire, and is the 46th largest settlement in England. In
2001 the city proper had a population of 123,205. However the built-up area
extends beyond the city boundary. The 2001 census gave the population of the
whole "Gloucester Urban Area" as 136,203.
Mangotsfield is a village in
Gloucestershire, north of the suburb of Kingswood, bounded to the north by
the M4 motorway and to the east by the Emersons Green housing estate. The
village is in the north-east outer-suburbs of the Bristol
Naunton is a village in Gloucestershire. It is situated in the Cotswolds, an
area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB); approximately 6 miles West of
Stow-on-the-Wold and 12 miles East of Cheltenham. The population of Naunton
in 2000 was 371.
Newnham on Severn is a village in west Gloucestershire. It lies in the Royal
Forest of Dean, on the west bank of the River Severn, approximately 10 miles
south-west of Gloucester and three miles southeast of Cinderford. It is on
the A48 road between Gloucester and Newport, Wales.
Rangeworthy is a semi-rural farming village in South Gloucestershire. The
village lies between Iron Acton and Bagstone. It is a long village divided
by a road but has a strong community spirit with a well used village hall.
Stroud is a town and civil
parish in the county of Gloucestershire. It is the main town in Stroud
District. Situated below the western escarpment of the Cotswold Hills, at
the meeting point of the Five Valleys, the town is noted for its steep
streets and cafe culture. The Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
surrounds the town in all directions, and the Cotswold Way path passes by it
to the west.
Tewkesbury is a town in
Gloucestershire. It stands at the confluence of the River Severn and the
River Avon, and also minor tributaries the Swilgate and Carrant Brook. It
gives its name to the Borough of Tewkesbury, of which the town is the
largest settlement.
Thornbury is a market town in
South Gloucestershire, approximately 12 miles (19km) north of the city of
Bristol, with a population of around 12,250. The town hosts South
Gloucestershire Council headquarters and is twinned with Bockenem in
Germany. Thornbury is a Britain in Bloom award winning town and also has its
own competition, Thornbury in Bloom. Its suburbs include the Morton and
Thornbury Park districts.
Yate is a town at the
southwest extremity of the Cotswold Hills, 12 miles (19 km) northeast of the
city of Bristol. At the 2001 census its population was 21,789. The much
smaller town of Chipping Sodbury (population 5,066) is contiguous with Yate
to the east. The majority of the development from a village into a new town
was in the 1960s as an overspill/commuter town for Bristol. |
